Program Day-by-Day

Zip around deepest regions of the Amazon in your nitro Bass boat with a local knowledgeable fishing guide. Access rivers not even named yet and only accessible by seaplane. It’s not unusual to catch 12-25 lb Peacock Bass. The black water of the Rio Negro is “brackish” and you can find Pink Dolphin swimming about your boat. You can discard piranhas 8 of 10 casts, for the fierce “Peacock Bass” that will snap 30-lb. monofilament like thread, straighten saltwater hooks, mangle lures and send rods home in more pieces than you came with.

Called "tucunare" in Portuguese, the peacock bass is a born ambusher and one of the most ferocious freshwater fish you'll find anywhere. Interestingly enough, the "bass" portion of the fish's name is a bit incorrect. Peacocks are actually members of the cichlid family (like oscar).

Peacocks come in several varieties, including speckled, black-barred, butterfly and royal. In our area of the Amazon, we see all of them except royal. The world record peacock (a 27-pounder caught by one our anglers) is speckled.
These varieties range in color and size, but the behavior is pretty much the same. Mean. Aggressive. They are almost exclusively diurnal and aren't the least bit sun-shy, hitting most lures at the surface with explosive force. They're not too choosey about baits, but landing them is guaranteed to be one of the toughest freshwater fights you'll ever get in. You'll love every second of it.

The Lodge

This luxury lodge opened in October of 1998 and offers anglers the finest in land based accommodations in the heart of Brazil's world record peacock bass fishing. The lodge is located 60 river miles upriver from “Barcelos” on the southern bank of the famous Rio Negro. The fully air-conditioned lodge, built with native woods, slate floors and a thatched roof, is surrounded by windows overlooking the Rio Negro and the Brazilian Rain Forest. The lodge consists of a 5,000 sq. ft. main lodge for relaxing and dining, and eight private cabanas sleeping two anglers each in queen beds, with private baths and walk-in closets for our clients' comfort and privacy. In addition to these extraordinary facilites, the lodge offers daily laundry service, jungle trails and a private beach.

Guides & Fishing

The location for the Rio Negro lodge was carefully selected in the heart of Brazil's finest trophy peacock bass fishery and is only a 20 minute boat ride from where an Amazon Tours angler caught the 27 pound IGFA all tackle world record peacock bass in 1994. Since the lodge was completed in late October of 1998, lodge anglers have experienced excellent fishing with peacock bass up to 24.5 pounds being caught.

The Rio Negro is approximately 40 kilometers wide at the lodge, offering nearly endless trophy bass fishing in the sloughs and backwaters where the monster fish are caught. Fishing is conducted in state-of-the-art Nitro bass boats with 90 hp Mercury outboards, with two anglers and an experienced Brazilian guide enjoying the greatest new top water fishing available in the world today!
