Program Day-by-Day

The Pantanal is the largest wetland in South America, and the largest wetland in the world that has not been substantially modified by humans.

The most luxurious lodge in the Pantanal, the Refugio Caiman is set on a huge cattle ranch outside the town of Miranda, about 250km (155 miles) from Campo Grande. Activities here are very safe and "soft adventure". Huge jabiru storks, flocks of roseate spoonbills, egrets of all shapes and sizes, caiman, and capybaras can all be seen within steps of the lodge. Hyacinth macaws are frequently spotted. The food is outstanding and the accommodations, in an old hacienda with a new central pool, positively luxurious.

Almost ironically, your adventure starts in another type of jungle...a concrete one, Sao Paulo. Enjoy your city hit, before you begin your natural adventure!

Day 1

Upon arrival in Sao Paulo, you will be met and driven to your hotel.Your evening is free to take advantage of one of the countless gourmet restaurants here.

Day 2

After a leisurely breakfast you will be driven to the airport. Flight from Sao Paulo to Campo Grande. Transfer by air conditioned car to Caiman Resort. Upon arrival at the resort you will enjoy a fine dinner. After dinner, there will be a slide presentation of what you will do and see over the next few days.

Day 3

After an early breakfast you are off on your first adventure: Photo Safari A tour in an open vehicle is the best way to reach places far from the farm. Crossing fields and stretches of jungle, this tour creates opportunities to observe and photograph wild life.

After lunch, a Hiking Tour. Taking place mainly on trails through heavy bush, the hikes make it easy to observe forest vegetation and the animals that live there, like “quatis” (raccoon-like mammals) and monkeys. There are approximately 12 different hikes, which are taken on different days to ensure as little disturbance as possible to the animals in each area.

Day 4

Early breakfast then off to your first outing: a Horse back ride. This is one of the best ways to explore the Pantanal, allowing for visits to flooded areas, which are inaccessible by other means, where the water is too deep for motorized vehicles or too shallow for boats. The horses of the Pantanal, which are raised in the region, are stout, strong, have water-resistant skin, and are adapted to crossing long streches of flooded fields. These horses are trained for inexperienced riders, making it easy for everyone to observe different environments in the Pantanal.

After a replenishing lunch you will take a Canoe Tour. Refúgio Ecológico Caiman offers Canadian canoe tours on the lakes within the ranch. On these tours, mammals such as capybaras, and monkeys can be seen on shore. The birds that commonly inhabit the area are: cormorants, anhingas, skimmers, herons and egrets. The sounds of the animals and birds will fill your senses. Guests on the tours travel through the Pantanal to the sounds of toucans, herons, parakeets, jacanas and kingfishers and with luck capuchin and howler monkeys.

Day 5

After breakfast, another adventure: The Farm Tour starts at the headquarters of the lodge and involves a visit to the stable, the workers’ quarters and the headquarters of Blue Macaw Project, dedicated to preserving this beautiful creature.

After dinner, you’ll do some “night spotting”, observing nocturnal animals like alligators, capybaras, anteaters and small wolves, with the help of your guide and flashlights.
